Laura and I have had the opportunity to sit down and discuss what we feel the next steps should be moving forward.
First, I want to say thank you. The support we’ve received has been overwhelming, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has reached out, shared their experiences, and signed the petition.
We still need parents, caregivers, former students, and current students to continue sharing their stories with Brandon School Division. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, Laura and I are happy to be your voice. You do not need to provide your name or your school—just your experience.
Nearly a month has passed since these events occurred, and we have asked BSD to make a public statement. To date, they have not done so.
Laura and I have both been invited to participate in a Behaviour Systems Review Panel aimed at identifying gaps within current behaviour, bullying, and school support protocols. While we appreciate the invitation and are hopeful meaningful change can come from it, we have not yet received many details about the process. We recognize that systemic change takes time, but we remain committed to advocating for students and families throughout that process.
Now more than ever, we need parents to advocate for their children. Anti-bullying efforts cannot be limited to one day a year. Creating safe schools requires a year-round commitment, with systems that allow students and families to come forward without fear of being dismissed, ignored, or having their concerns minimized.
