Rory Young was a close friend of mine. He was killed by Jihadists on April 26, 2021 in Mali. Jihadists also poach wildlife to finance their, well, terrorism. I am posting this because many people outside of Africa don't even know he existed, yet he faced up to the challenge of protecting wildlife everyday. Please watch this clip to honor Rory, you'll see what I mean.

Land mines in potholed roads, IED's in rocky areas and small arms fire from terrorist groups on the road from Doentza to Gao.

The desert elephants of Mali travel vast distances within the Sahel and to get into their range this is the only route. The mixed army/ ranger unit is the first anti poaching unit in Mali and is constructed in such a way because of the current war.
