Christopher L. Gordon did not receive the maximum sentence allowed under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and his sentencing will not reverse the unjust killing of the polar bear. It does, however, send a powerful message that people around the world will not tolerate actions such as Christopher L. Gordon's. On Friday, Christopher L. Gordon, a Kaktovik man guilty of the killing and wanton waste of a polar bear last year, was sentenced to three months in federal prison, one year of supervised release, and a $4,500 fine.
At his sentencing hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Ralph Beistline noted the importance of deterring similar conduct.
