The lion's name is Skye. Skye was one of the most beloved lions in South Africa's famed Kruger National Park (KNP). He was not only a pride leader but he was a father to very young cubs. But none of that mattered to an American big game hunter who paid around $75,000 to take his life. He shot Skye on June 7, 2018, after luring him onto adjacent Umbabat Private Nature Reserve (UPNR). If the lion had stayed within KNP he would have been safe. Animals in the national park are fully protected and have grown used to relative up-close contact with humans. Whitworth is a member of Safari Club International (SCI), which defines hunting success in terms of size and rarity. Apparently the larger the horns/tusks and rarer the animal, the more respect you are due for killing it. Whitworth’s 15-year-old daughter was awarded the title “2018 SCI Young Hunter of the Year”, and the SCI website features her proudly posing with a massive buffalo she killed. A sad spin-off of this killing is that Skye's cubs have been killed by incoming males. This is what happens once the leader of the pride dies, incoming males kill his offspring and mate with the females to produce their own offspring. Whitworth Tool Inc. Whitworth Tool Inc. has a good reputation in Hardinsburg, Kentucky. The business was started by Kenny Whitworth in 1998 who I believe is Jared Whitworth’s father. They are a hunting family. Jared is relatively wealthy and a member and sponsor of the Safari Club International, a wealthy organization which promotes and organizes trophy hunting trips including to Africa. It is big business. Between 2005 and 2014 trophy hunters from America killed 5,552 African lions! All for fun.
