Gimpo City offers many tourist attractions, festivals, and sports activities. It is part of Mayor Young-rok Yoo’s plan to make his city a more prosperous place, a happy place for women and seniors, a place that provides free meals to all students. This is part of the Mayor’s bigger goal to create a sustainable and creative city, one that is human-oriented, harmony-oriented, and hope-oriented. But how will tourists feel about visiting a city in which the dog meat industry raises and brutally slaughters millions of dogs each year? Will people from countries where dogs are beloved companions and considered part of the family be interested in attending festivals where they may come face-to-face with the reality of the cruel way in which dogs are treated? They will not think of Gimpo as a happy creative place when they see these poor pitiful dogs being electrocuted, hanged, or beaten, and then thrown into boiling water – sometimes while still alive. No tourist will be able to see this and think humanity, harmony, and hope exist in Gimpo for the millions of dogs who suffer mercilessly their entire lives. What will they think of the residents of this city who allow the atrocity of the dog meat industry to continue? The Mayor has said that he hopes the website of Gimpo will serve as a good place for the exchange of valuable ideas and opinions. It is time he listened to the valuable idea and opinion that the era of the dog meat industry is over, and if he truly wants a city that is humanity, harmony, and hope oriented he will end the abhorrent dog meat trade now.
