On August 9, 2016, a Korean TV program called “In Depth Camera” reported on a story about people taking their pet dogs on their summer vacation. The next day the story they reported on was one that is often ignored by Koreans because it makes them feel very unpleasant and uncomfortable; it was about the dogs that their society has labeled “meat dogs.”
According to the reporter, when he first arrived at the dog meat farm, the dogs, startled by unfamiliar footsteps, began barking. He saw a mother dog covered with necrotic wounds feeding her puppies, and another dog, tied up, exhibiting anxious repetitive behavior. The food fed to the dogs was maggot infested rotten food waste slops.
At another dog farm, plastic bags, unrecognizable organs and a head of a dead dog were floating around in the dogs’ food bin. The waste slop was rotten, fetid, black in color, but the hungry dogs had no choice but to eat it.
Why weren’t the dogs fed regular dog food, the reporter asked the farmer. “They need to be fed ‘Jjambap’ – food waste slop – as that makes the dog meat taste better,” replied the farmer. “People don’t buy dogs fed on dog food.”
Animal protection law that prohibits the killing of the same animal species in front of each other wasn’t being enforced. The dog farmer tells the reporter that for big dogs he uses a hammer because the dogs don’t die as easily with electricity.
