The Issue

Women hold an invaluable place in our families, communities, and everyday lives. When violence is perpetrated against them, it doesn't just harm individuals, it tears at the fabric of our society. The safety of women and girls is an issue that hits close to home for me, as it does for many others who see our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends at risk.

In recent years, femicide, the act of killing women because they are women, has plagued our communities worldwide. According to the United Nations, approximately 81,000 women and girls globally were murdered in 2020. The numbers are staggering, and yet, much-needed action from our leaders is still lacking. In many areas, including our own, the justice system fails to provide adequate protection or accountability, leaving women vulnerable and their killers unpunished.

We shouldn't have to live in fear or watch helplessly as women in our lives face constant threats to their safety. Our elected officials have a duty to protect their citizens, yet their inaction speaks volumes. This violence against women is not a woman's issue alone; it is a human issue, a societal problem, and it requires urgent intervention.

Boycotting elections is a drastic measure, but it is one of the few powerful tools we have as citizens to demand the change we desperately need. By refusing to participate in the electoral process, we send a strong message to politicians and lawmakers that their complacency will no longer be tolerated. We insist on a system that takes concrete steps to combat gender-based violence. This means implementing more stringent laws against femicide, ensuring that law enforcement agencies are properly trained to handle these cases, and providing support to survivors and the families of victims.

Our demand is simple yet imperative: immediate and substantial legislative and societal reforms to protect women and girls from violence. We must hold those in power accountable—starting with our electoral choices, or the lack thereof—until we see real change.

Sign this petition to join our call for a boycott of elections until our leaders commit to protecting women and eradicating femicide once and for all. Our collective voice can and must be heard.
