Yangju City sells itself as a cultural city, home to theme parks, theatres, art and cultural learning centres. It has a growing tourism industry and a thriving restaurant and cultural arts scene. What it doesn’t market is the thriving outdated and medieval trade in dog meat for human consumption. The glossy photographs and tourist blurb of this city fails to mention the life of torment, darkness and death that awaits the dogs that dwell in its meat trade industry. A blind eye is turned to this practice, which is as much a part of this city as its cultural learning centre. The reason Yangju doesn’t mention the horrors of this trade is that they know this practice is cruel, inhumane and disgusting, both domestically and internationally – but they don’t want to upset some of their residents by doing something about this. Yangju – this is simply not good enough, you are letting down your citizens, your legitimate businesses and Korea in allowing this shadow-trade to continue to operate within your city. You are tarring all these people with the blood of the innocent dogs condemned to life in the meat trade.
