The Tribe of Micosay, a proud partner of Boy Scouts of America, is a blatant form of harmful cultural appropriation.  Adults are teaching children to engage in racist and inappropriate behaviors, such as mimicking Native American dance and ceremony. These "dances and ceremonies" teach the young people that it is appropriate and acceptable to engage in acts that cause harm to and are disrespectful f Native American people.  Specific tribal nations are mimicked through "dance teams", including the Kanza, Maha (Omaha), and Otoe.  The tribe of Micosay hosts an annual Fall pow Wow at Camp Grier where they inappropriately mock our ceremonial and traditional dances.

Native people throughout the Americas have experienced generations of trauma through genocidal policies initiated by the United States.  This includes our songs and dances being outlawed by the federal government.  Our ceremonial way of life was not legal until 1978 with the American Indian Religious Freedoms Act (AIRFA).  Boarding schools existed to force us into assimilation from the 1800's until as recently as the 1960's.  It was "bad" to be native and express ourselves through ceremonial ways of life.  The fact that white adults are teaching white children to mock and appropriate Native culture after a history of genocidal practices, illustrates the racist and oppressive nature of these acts.

The adults and children who partake in these activities through the Boy Scouts of America are continuing a legacy of racism and harm to Native people.  The "Tribe of Micosay" must be dismantled and ended immediately.
