Allowing of back yard chickens in Duncannon Borough

This petition had 1,425 supporters

The raising of back yard chickens has become quite popular in recent years. Many municipalities in the mid state have had this discussion in recent years, and most have moved to allow back yard chickens. Not only do chickens provide fresh eggs, they also help control bug and insect populations and are an excellent teaching opportunity for young children to learn about animal care and a sense of responsibility in caring for them. If care is taken to ensure proper food storage and cleaning of the coupe, there are no sanitary concerns to the community. There are already a few people in Duncannon who have been raising chickens for the past several years, and many more who have expressed interest in doing so. However the Borough now wants to put a stop to this. We ask that any Borough resident who supports the raising of back yard chickens sign this petition that will be presented to council at the next meeting. Even if you do not want to raise chickens yourself but support allowing those who do to do so, please sign and show your support. We will take the list of supporters to council and ask for an ordinance to be created that allows the raising of back yard chickens and sets forth rules to ensure that those who do follow regulations to ensure the birds remain contained, are kept in a sanitary manor and do not become a nuisance to the community.
