Petition updateLaunch a public inquiry into the #DeniedMyVote scandal“Two-tier system” - the local voting rights of EU citizens in UK

Our campaign to safeguard the voting rights of all EU citizens in the UK is gaining traction following our launch last week in London.

As Claudia Delpero, writing in Europe Street News, explains:

"After May this year only the following groups of EU citizens will maintain their electoral rights in local elections:

  • EU citizens who moved to the UK by 31 December 2020, the end of the post-Brexit transition period, “if they retain a lawful immigration status”,
  • EU citizens from countries that have signed a bilateral treaty with the UK – so far Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain,
  • Cypriot and Maltese citizens, because they are part of the Commonwealth
Irish citizens, because their electoral rights in the UK are long-standing and separate from EU membership."

The best way to challenge the new exclusions is for EU citizens to demonstrate at the local, regional and mayoral elections in England on 2 May that they value their vote.

That's why we are pulling out all the stops to make sure all EU Citizns in the UK know they have the right to vote.

We are doing everything we can to contact MPs, the political parties and Electoral Registration officers to make sure they do everything they can to remind EU citizens to register and participate in the elections on 2 May.

With your help we can and we wll do even more.

  • £20 means we can contact one more MP
  • £50 means we can reach out to two Electoral Registration Officers
  • £100 means thousands more leaflets in the hands of community groups
  • £250 means we can translate these leaflets into different languages

Today, in 2024, in one of the world's oldest democracies we are witnessing a systematic dismantling of voting rights.

We called out the UK's woeful record in denying the rights of EU Citizens, and here we have the phenomenon again.

It doesn't matter that the new measures only relate to relative newcomers to the UK  - we say all EU citizens should have the vote.

No EU citizens should lose their voice at the ballot box. We said that in 2014, in 2019 and we saying it again now.
