European elections may be a thing of the past in the UK but EU citizens still have the right to vote and stand in local and regional elections as well as elections to the Scottish Parliament.

That's why it is so important to step up our campaign for a public inquiry into #DeniedMyVote.

Mindful of the court case that was heard last week, we have held back on aspects of our campaign.

We now need to build up renewed pressure for all involved in the #DeniedMyVote scandal to be held to account.

Whatever the legal position, the UK Government clearly dragged its feet in making adequate preparations for the 2019 European elections, despite countless warnings from New Europeans and others.

The role of the Electoral Commission and local registration officers, many of who had learned the lessons of 2014 when New Europeans exposed voter suppression on a similar scale, also needs attention.

Only a public inquiry can find out why it was that up to 1.7million EU citizens and Britons abroad were denied a vote in 2019.

That matters, because EU citizens still have the vote today in the UK - not in General Elections or UK referendums but for everything else.

Democracy works best when it is inclusive.  We shouldn't be in a situation where we have to point the finger of blame.

We need a democratic culture that values the voice of each and every one of us and in which everyone has the sense that they belong.

This is what we are working for in our campaign for a public inquiry into #DeniedMyVote. 

We need to learn the lessons of 2019 so we can build a stronger, more inclusive democracy in the future - in the interests of all. 

On Monday, we look back one year and one day on from Brexit and ask "What price are citizens paying the price of Brexit?"
