We have been denied our vote, and now we have been denied our debate and denied our democracy.

Despite hinting parliament might sit to the end of the week, the Government shut parliament down two days before our debate.

This is what Lyn Brown MP, who tabled the debate, had to say:

"Theresa May’s Government denied up to 2 million EU citizens a vote.

They have been confronted with an often-hostile debate over their rights to stay in their homes, with their families and in their communities.  It is totally unacceptable.

Now, the Prime Minister has denied their voices get again by proroguing parliament, ensuring his government cannot be held to account for its callous betrayal of our European friends and neighbours who have, in some cases, been settled for decades.

These actions constitute a real threat to our institutions, to the rule of law and to our precious democracy itself."

What next?

#DeniedMyVote is a clear breach of citizens’ rights and an interference in the democratic process.

We cannot and will not let the matter drop.

The shutting down of parliament shows that the Government is running scared of democratic scrutiny.

The Government may think that by shutting down parliament they can shut down democracy and debate.

It’s the age old tactic of wearing us down until we can no longer campaign

Don’t let that happen with #DeniedMyVote

We have asked Lyn Brown to apply for her debate again. And we are asking many other MPs to do so, too.

And we are stepping up our campaign in the European Parliament and with the Council of Europe.

Today is International Day of Democracy.

We have written to the Council of Europe together with civil rights activists across the EU to call the UK government to order.

Letter to Council of Europe on International Democracy Day

It is wrong that the Government should shut down parliament.

It is frightening the Prime Minister implies he will not obey the rule of law

It is unfair and unacceptable that citizens should be denied the vote.

With your support, we will continue to:

- expose the #DeniedMyVote scandal

- call for an independent public inquiry into what went wrong

- campaign for EU citizens to keep voting right in local elections

- insist on the abolition of the 15 year rule for Britons abroad

- pursue an investigation of #DeniedMyVote in the European Parliament

- name and shame the UK government with the Council of Europe

None of this is possible without the contributions you are making to our campaign appeal.

Please use the link below (or above in this text) to make your contribution to that we can fight another day.

#DeniedMyVote shines a light on the whole sorry state of democracy in Britain. It's not a fight we can risk losing.

With your support we can continue to make an impact, we can continue to fight on until we win.
