If we have learned one thing from #DeniedMyVote, it is that we need to be ever vigilant to protect the franchise and therefore the quality of our democracy in the UK.

Citizens of all EU27 member states resident in the UK have a right to vote and to stand as candidates, not just in European elections but also in local government elections.

If you can chip in £5, £10, £20 to support our campaign, please do so here

This includes elections to district and county councils, the GLA, city mayors, police and crime commissioners, and indeed elections to devolved legislatures.

As Dr Ruvi Ziegler, Chair of New Europeans UK explains, these rights are anchored in UK law and will remain on the statute book if the UK leaves the EU unless the Government introduces new legislation to remove the franchise from EU citizens.

Even if the Government does not take steps to disenfranchise EU citizens from being able to vote in local government elections, there is still a risk that many will think they are not entitled to vote any longer once the UK leaves the EU even though this is not true.

So as we continue to press for justice through a public inquiry into #DeniedMyVote we also need to campaign to make sure that EU27 citizens retain their voting rights in local government elections.

If you would like to find out more about this and other campaigns and to join us in defending the rights of EU citizens and Britons abroad, please complete our online registration form:

Our staff and volunteers do an amazing job but we need you to support us through your annual subscription to make sure that we can sustain the campaign right through to the day we win.

We would also like to invite you to sign our open letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

As we say in the letter, the Government must at the very least take steps to ensure that no further disenfranchisement of EU citizens takes place.

The best way to do that is to guarantee their rights to vote in local government elections even if Britain does leave the EU.

Nothing short of that could make amends for #DeniedMyVote or pass muster in terms of showing EU citizens that all our voices count and we are all welcome here.

We will be reporting further on the campaign for a public inquiry into what happened in the European elections in the next update.

Rest assured that we are not going to let this go.
