The Entrepreneurial Journey of Nathan Chan, Publisher of Foundr Magazine
The Issue
Each entrepreneur has a unique story to tell. For Nathan Chan, Publisher of Foundr Magazine, a magazine about entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, his entrepreneurial journey started with the creation of his magazine. The impetus to start that journey began when he was reading “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” and “The Four-Hour Work Week.” After reading those two books, he knew that the 9-to-5 life wasn't for him.
Beyond the desire to no longer have a traditional career, Nathan saw that many entrepreneurs were focusing on social causes, which appealed to him as well given his passion for helping people. The idea of helping others get to where they want in life or the ability to make a difference for them is a feeling that has motivated Nathan to participate in many organizations where he could lend a hand to others. In referencing a quote from a recent Tony Robbins interview Nathan had: “The secret to living is giving.”
In working with founders through his work at the magazine, Nathan has learned so much more about the entrepreneurial journey and the best way for founders to successfully grow their startups. As he explained, “The best way is by selling something that people want to buy and by building something that people actually care about that solves a real problem. The next part is finding one or two customer acquisition channels that you can master to really fuel the growth of the business.”
He’s applied this same startup lesson to his own entrepreneurial venture with Foundr Magazine. Nathan loved the idea of starting his own business. However, when he looked for a magazine that could help him get his business off the ground, it turned out there weren’t any business magazines in that space and those that already existed were directed at those who already had an established business.
That got him thinking that maybe there were others like himself that would benefit and care about a magazine directed at those who were starting their own businesses. Now, Foundr helps millions of entrepreneurs with fresh content that offers advice on all aspects of starting and managing a company into an established, successful business.
Through the content development and interviews with hundreds of entrepreneurs, Nathan has seen what creates a successful company -- strong financials, a company that continues to grow month on month, amazing products or services that truly make the world a better place, and a great culture where people enjoy working. And, he’s learned even more from interviewing top entrepreneurs like his idol, Seth Godin, who told him to only do work that truly matters and do it now when there is no better time in history to start a business.
However, Nathan has also witnessed the mistakes that even the most successful startups have made. Even the most savvy of entrepreneurs has made mistakes like spending money on things they don't need, hiring on just skills and not considering attitude, worrying too much about vanity metrics, and becoming complacent. These are the lessons that Nathan is sharing within the content of his magazine to help others not repeat those mistakes, leverage best practices, and move the needle forward on entrepreneurship.
What’s next for Nathan on his entrepreneurial journey? He’ll tell you he’s just getting warmed up an will continue down the road fueling the passion for what he does at the magazine and the work he does to help other entrepreneurs like himself.
