Message aux signatairesBoeing: Prove it's safe before you tear down a plutonium lab near LA

We were watching for radioactive dust

We found out that Boeing has started the demolition of five buildings at the Santa Susana Field Lab, one of California's most toxic and radioactive sites. They've already demolished one and they're tearing the second down now. We know all five buildings were used for Cold War era radioactive experimentation. In the 1980s they were tested with limited equipment, now-obsolete regulations, and with shoddy methods -- and even still the plutonium fuel facilty had 88 detections "above background."

But the final verdict about the buildings was decided by a judge and not independent scientists. On paper, the buildings are not-radioactive. In real life, it's VERY likely they're still contaminated, possibly with one of the most deadly substances on earth... plutonium 239 which has a 24,000 half-life.

We were worried that Boeing might not use the more protective, and more expensive, methods to keep the public safe from any risk of being exposed to potentially radioactive dust from the demolition. We were right to worry. We saw dusty trucks coming offsite without hard-covers to protect people along the route from migrant dust. Workers told us they had not been warned. The waste was taken to a less protective landfill instead of a low-level radioactive waste site.

Boeing continues to assert everything they're doing is legal. But legal isn't the same as safe, and our communities shouldn't have to be the victims of Boeing's greed.
