Schools should start later

The Issue

We, the undersigned, do not support Souhegan High School current school start beginning at 7:25am, resulting in many students having to wake up as early as 5:00am due to early bus pick up times. The Centers for Disease Control, a federal agency with the goal of improving the overall public’s health, states that as children approach and go through puberty, their brains begin producing the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin on a delayed schedule.  This could cause students to suffer sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation happens when someone is suffering from lack of sleep. WebMD, an organization with in-depth reference material about health topics, has explained sleep deprivation not only impedes judgement and decision-making abilities, but impacts one’s life in various ways. WebMD has also provided information that sleep deprivation can impact weight, eating disorders, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, depression, anxiety, sport injuries, substance abuse, suicidal ideation and academics.

Restoring traditional school start times, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the Centers for Disease Control, is a practical and necessary solution with broad and immediate benefits for children of all ages. This is a call to action for educators, health professionals, parents, students and public officials to work together for safe, healthy communities.

Due to the early start times, sleep deprivation can negatively impact a student’s academics and daily life. It is our job as students of Souhegan High School and citizens of the United States of America to speak up for what we believe is right and what we believe can create a positive impact on our school. Students should not have to choose between their health and their grades.
