Dear Board of Selectmen,
Our children, their safety, and their education are important to all parents and the Littleton community at large. We believe the Littleton School Dept., the School Committee, and the school administrators have done a great job of keeping our kids safe while providing nurturing environments; we thank them for this. But times are changing. Littleton is a growing community, and while the school population hasn’t skyrocketed, we are seeing larger numbers in the younger grades. Also changing are the dangers and vulnerabilities our schools and our children face. Currently, our lone School Resource Officer (SRO) is responsible for 1,670 kids. The signatories of this letter believe it is time to add an additional SRO to the Littleton school system.
We have been very lucky in Littleton to have some phenomenal SROs in past years. As role models, they have built bonds between young people and law enforcement that provides understanding and respect from both sides. Our SROs have been active in the community during community events, and have helped to create an inclusive environment within the schools; students who feel safe become better learners and better citizens. We would like to see these efforts doubled.
The purpose of this letter is to respectfully ask you to consider funding a second SRO in the 2020 town budget. Our hope is that by requesting this now, as you begin discussions about the next budget, you will be able to reach out to the School Committee, the Finance Committee, and other town residents to discuss this proposal. We would hope that you would also involve Police Chief, Matthew Pinard in these discussions.
Thank you very much for your time and your consideration of our request.
