To start, thank you all SO MUCH for the 25,000 signatures! Not only did the points raised in our letter receive a response from Bluesky Trust & Safety, but also Mr Singal himself chose to remove the offending posts which inspired our campaign. Nonetheless, the open-letter team is still deeply troubled by Bluesky Trust & Safety's clarification to the Community Guidelines which we believe will now tolerate private but non identifiable information shared without a person's consent. We believe that this clarification will allow posting of revenge porn so long as a name is not included, and we are certain this clarification has now allowed private medical information to be posted so long as a name is not included. Permitting such content enables Bluesky to be used as a platform for the distribution of blackmail material.
For obvious reasons we ask Bluesky Moderation to reject their recent clarification and instead continue to enforce its existing Community Guidelines as they were written. We also ask that this community which has shown us tremendous support over these past few days to refrain from engaging in any behaviour one may believe to be permitted by these ill-advised ad-hoc clarifications to Bluesky's Community Guidelines and to instead continue holding ourselves to the previous Community Guidelines as they were written. For the time being we recommend for developers, public figures, and any users of this service to exercise extreme caution on the platform until further updates from Bluesky's Trust & Safety Team demonstrating an intent to return to enforcement of the existing Community Guidelines as they were written, or equivalent private information guidelines.
We once again thank you all for your support so far in opening a dialogue that is greatly necessary for the long term success of this project. Until meaningful and beneficial moderation enforcement changes are made, we ask you to continue sharing this letter with anyone who may be impacted by the recent policy clarifications.
