Cover Nutramigen formula when deemed medically necessary for Milk-Protein Allergy

The Issue

Currently, BlueCross BlueShield of Texas is only providing coverage for an elemental based (amino acid) formula when an infant is diagnosed with a food protein allergy. In some situations, an infant diagnosed with a milk-soy protein allergy is prescribed Nutramigen instead of an elemental formula for medical reasons determined by that particular infant's physician. The current cost of Nutramigen is approximately $35.99 for a 19.8 oz can. This cost can greatly burden families with private health insurance coverage. It is unfair for BCBS to cover an amino-acid based formula at a higher cost but deny coverage for Nutramigen for the same diagnosed medical condition. Insurance companies should not be able to dictate which infant formula is best for your child, or force you into a position where you must choose between what is best for your child over insurance coverage. By signing this petition, your voice can be heard and you can help stop this arbitrary practice.
