@BlueRodeo - Please Cancel Your Performance at the Calgary Stampede #PlsSkipTheStampede
The Issue
Since 1986, at least 89 defenseless and terrified horses, calves, and steers have been killed for the cheering crowds at the Calgary Stampede – suffering broken necks and broken legs. Countless more exploited animals have been injured - ridden, roped, bound, tied, wrestled, and slammed to the ground as they ran for their lives, solely for entertainment, and ultimately for monetary gain.
This archaic and barbaric practice is inconsistent with the values of love, compassion and justice - strong themes in your music.
Thankfully the tide is turning. Movies like Blackfish and Earthlings have helped many to reject the notion that animals are inanimate, unfeeling objects to be used for human gain.
I have been a fan of Blue Rodeo since your early days. Your lyrics speak to homelessness, aboriginal rights, politics, the environment, and justice. Canadian history will remember you as prolific and gifted songwriters - unafraid and unashamed to tackle important social issues - which is why I’m hoping you will reconsider your decision to play the Calgary Stampede and find another venue.
Farmed animals are the most vulnerable and subjugated beings on the planet. Please refuse to benefit - even indirectly - from their suffering.
Please don't let this obvious brutality get lost before your eyes.
