Call for action: Cover hospital grade breast pumps

As a new mother, I was excited about breastfeeding my newborn. My journey began the first day with challenges associated with latching -a painful experience. I continued putting my baby to the breast anyhow, knowing my milk is my baby's best food source. I requested lactation consultant, they'd exibit and resource techniques. I followed every led given, while still suffering through the pain. I learned insurance companies pay for hospital grade pumps that relieve the pain associated with latching, while increasing milk supply. I was elated!, until learning BCBS RI, my insurance company, only covers manual pumps. I did indeed try this pump which only increased my pain and discouraged me from breastfeeding. I was heartbroken. As a result, my milk supply was not properly established. After 2 1/2 months of trying to breastfeed, my journey has ended. I am left with the guilt of not being able to feed my precious baby properly, knowing a pump, not covered by my insurance, could've assisted me in ways I can now only imagine. I am asking all who have struggled the way I have, all who intend to breastfeed, all who've benifitted from a hospital grade pump, and those who support the importance of breastfeeding, to advocate with those of us who have BCBS RI insurance (one of the only insurance companies that does not supply hospital grade pumps to its insured) to begin covering hospital grade pumps.
