As 2015 draws to a close, CityPark4Brum would like to thank you again for your support and give you an update. There are now over 2400 signatories to the petition. The city council received the original petition with over 2000 names back in May and since then, Councillor Lisa Trickett (Cabinet Member for Sustainability) and Mark Rogers (Chief Executive) have both been in touch directly with the group. Also, the campaign has been picked up by the Birmingham Post (see: http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/business/business-news/hopes-raised-over-city-park-10136018). All this has only been made possible by your backing of this campaign. How large new green infrastructure for Smithfield and the larger Southern Gateway will be, and what form it will take, remains to be seen and no new plans have been released as yet. However what is certain is that those trusted to make these decisions are now fully aware of the benefits of green space and large parks to a global city like ours and in particular how they can boost the local economy and public health and reduce pollution. Creating green space is a long-term and lifetime investment for a city and in its inhabitants rather than a short-term fix. The petition is still live and will continue into 2016 so please continue to spread the word and follow the @CityPark4Brum twitter feed.
