Birmingham City Council to support a Peoples Vote with an option to remain in the EU

We the undersigned petition Birmingham City Council to support a 'People’s Vote’ on any final Brexit deal which includes an option for the United Kingdom to remain a full member of the European Union.
Businesses based in the area represented by Birmingham City Council, including Jaguar Land Rover and many smaller businesses operating in the manufacturing and hospitality industries, have warned repeatedly that exiting the European Union will have a damaging impact on them and their workers' livelihoods because of barriers to trade, additional bureaucracy and restrictions on labour recruitment- all of these will lead to rising prices and job losses.
According to the Government’s own analyses of all Brexit scenarios, the UK will be considerably worse off outside the European Union. The resultant negative consequences would especially hit the West Midlands hard. Even if there is a comprehensive trade deal, the West Midlands economy is expected to shrink by 8%. If the UK crashes out without a deal, that would rise to 13%. Birmingham already faces a number of social and economic challenges, and Brexit will only make it harder to overcome them.
Birmingham has benefitted greatly from European Union grants, without which we would not have seen the regeneration of Brindley Place, the ICC and Symphony Hall and the transformation of the canal network. In addition, involvement in European-wide projects has helped our city’s universities to develop into world-class institutions developing pioneering, life-changing research, attracting many students from other EU member states. Birmingham is best known for its entrepreneurial spirit as the 'City of a Thousand Trades’. With citizens who come from over 190 countries, Birmingham is a truly international and forward-looking city. Birmingham is also a city of the young - 40% of its population are aged under 25. These young people are overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU.
Whilst a very slight majority of Birmingham residents voted to leave the EU in the 2016 Referendum (50.4%), recent polls conducted by Best for Britain indicate that many residents have now changed their minds and that a majority across Birmingham would now vote to remain.
What is becoming clear is that any deal agreed between the government and the EU will never deliver on the promises given before the referendum by the Vote Leave campaign. In the interests of democracy, we believe the final Brexit deal should be put back to the British people for an informed final say.
In the light of all these facts, we urge the Council to show its support for the best interests of the local economy as well as the welfare of all people living and working in Birmingham by endorsing this petition.
