The recent shooting outside of the South Bar on Old Woodward in downtown Birmingham is just the latest in an ongoing series of incidents involving patrons of this bar/nightclub which have included fights and even a stabbing. The city council has the authority, under an ordinance adopted in August of 2011, to recommend to the state liquor control commission that  the liquor license for an establishment be rescinded for just cause, following an investigation and public hearing, or that the license not be renewed at annual renewal time. The state liquor control commission makes the final decision. The situation at South Bar constitutes a serious diversion of public safety resources from the rest of the Birmingham community and the latest gunfire incident constitutes a serious threat to public safety for those living in downtown Birmingham, along with visitors to the community's downtown area. The city commission must work toward rescinding the South Bar liquor license.
