Mountain Bike Trails in First Landing State Park
The Issue
SUPPORT LOCAL MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS!
This petition proposes that funds be approved to develop Mountain bike specific trails in First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach , Virginia. Virginia Beach is not only a very popular tourist destination but year round supports a local population of over 400,000. The location is within a 2 hour drive of a variety of historic and popular sites .
Many areas in Virginia including Springfield, Richmond, Williamsburg, Roanoke, and most of the state parks have developed trails specifically designed for mountain biking (also known as trail biking). Some of the ski resorts such as Bryce and Massanutten are mountain bike parks that utilize their slopes during the warmer seasons. Currently there are no dedicated mountain biking trails in the eastern tidewater area, Hampton Roads. With a local regional population of 1,000,000 people on the southside, there exists a vast opportunity for recreational spending toward the biking industry. Some money will focus on road biking which eventually requires government spending on dedicated, paved biking lanes. The other group of bikers who support the biking economy through organizational support and economic outlay are the mountain bikers. They prefer to bike on single track trails in the woods with the challenges of roots, ditches, turns and other technical trail features.
The approval of the Virginia State Park Service is needed to allow for the opportunity and financial support to continue to encourage the growth of the mountain bike community in the Virginia Beach area.
