Mayor de Blasio and key city government staff are spending this week in Staten Island. This morning, I attended a Borough Resource Fair at Borough Hall, where I had the opportunity to speak with Staten Island’s DOT Commissioner, Tom Cocola and his staff. We discussed the inhumane conditions suffered by people with disabilities who lived at the Willowbrook State School, and Bernard Carabello’s ongoing work to empower people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to speak up for their rights and the things that matter to them. I am happy to report that the first 1,000 signatures from our online and paper petitions have been delivered to Commissioner Cocola, who assured me that the Mayor will receive them, along with the many comments and testimonials people have shared in support of Bernard’s name being added to one of three new Staten Island Ferry boats. Thanks to everyone who is supporting this petition by signing, commenting, and sharing. Thanks also to NYC’s government officials for visiting Staten Island to hear the suggestions and concerns of our community.
