Bicycles must be registered before being sold online

The Issue

1000’s of bicycles are being stolen everyday in the UK, but the government has failed to act. There are numerous stories in the press about cyclists being attacked on the street for expensive bicycles, you can’t leave them outside your home for fear of being stolen, and it stops people trying to be more green by using bicycles more.

One simple deterrent for criminals who sell stolen bicycles on EBay, GumtreeUK, and other online market places is for the bicycles to be registered. A nationally recognised way of doing this exists through Bicycle Register so that prospective buyers can be assured that they are not supporting criminals. Legislation should be introduced that no bicycles can be sold online if they do not provide the frame number that is cross checked against the register.

Its a simple way to reduce bicycle crime. The mobile phone companies introduced simple measures that stopped the huge number of muggings for phones. It will of course still happen, but the police are helpless without proper evidence that the online sale is criminal. Stop bicycle crime, sign this petition.
