A Call for Action on the Rising Cost of Essential Goods

For many Filipino families, putting food on the table is no longer as simple as it should be. As the prices of food and other basic necessities continue to place pressure on household budgets, families are increasingly forced to stretch their income just to meet their everyday needs.

Food is not a luxury. It is a basic necessity. Yet when essential goods become increasingly difficult to afford, the effects reach far beyond the grocery bill. Families may have to reduce the quality or quantity of food they purchase, postpone other necessary expenses, or make difficult choices between competing needs.

This is not simply a matter of wanting cheaper products. It is about making sure that ordinary Filipino families can continue to afford the necessities required for a decent and dignified life.

We Are Calling on the National Government and Relevant Government Agencies To:

• Strengthen measures that help keep essential food and household necessities affordable and accessible.
• Continue monitoring the prices and supply of basic commodities to address unreasonable price increases.
• Strengthen programs that support vulnerable and low-income families affected by rising living costs.
• Improve coordination among relevant agencies to promote stable supplies and fair prices for essential goods.
• Provide clear and accessible information to the public regarding government measures addressing the rising cost of basic necessities.

Why this matters

The rising cost of necessities affects people differently, but its consequences can be especially difficult for households with limited income. When a larger portion of a family's earnings goes toward basic needs, there is less room for education, healthcare, transportation, savings, and other important expenses.

Addressing affordability is therefore not only about lowering prices. It is about protecting people's ability to meet their basic needs without constantly having to choose which necessity they can afford.

We believe that access to sufficient and affordable food should remain a priority. Government action should continue to focus on practical, transparent, and sustainable measures that help Filipino families cope with the rising cost of living.

We call on the national government and relevant government agencies to strengthen and sustain efforts that make basic necessities—especially essential food products—more affordable and accessible to Filipino families.

Because food should not be something families have to struggle to afford. Food should be for everyone.
