Hello fellow members,

 

If you haven’t heard, breathe a sigh of relief. Our rent’s not going up this year. The board voted to freeze rates for the 2021-22 academic year.

 

Many of our demands have been recognized or addressed. But how do we achieve real structural change in the BSC -- so “we own it” doesn’t just feel like an advertising slogan?

 

First, we have to understand how the BSC works today. The BSC is a non-profit corporation with some cooperative features -- namely, a Board of Directors which is almost all student-members. 

 

The non-profit’s structure, operations, and policies are overseen and controlled by this board. Every unit elects at least 1 representative to the Board. These elections are coming up ASAP, if they haven’t happened already. Ask candidates to commit to be bold and invest back in us rather than corporate thinking. Or, consider running for Board yourself! (You’ll get your workshift fulfilled, or get paid at the apartments.)

 

Transformative change is urgently needed in the BSC. This will only happen if we get educated, organized, and demand the kind of co-op we need.
