Mornington Community Safelink – Priority 1 for the Peninsula (Bay) Trail

Community Update September 2021

The Mornington Community Safelink is Priority 1, in the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s plan for development of the Peninsula Trail (previously called the Bay Trail).

It will link the Peninsula Link Trail where it ends at Moorooduc Station, to Mornington,  and to the Harrap Creek Trail to Mt.Martha,  and the Briars. It will connect schools, homes, shops and sports precincts.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council are actively supporting it

o   Council approved $.49m in this year’s budget to advance the Peninsula Trail.

o   Council is currently recruiting a person to lead the development of the Peninsula Trail

o   Council and the eight Rotary Clubs on the Peninsula are working together on a series of projects to enhance the Peninsula Trail, things like rest stops etc.

o   The Council have completed a very detailed study that demonstrates the significant economic benefit of the Peninsula Trail and the Safelink.

Community support continues to grow

o   The Council’s process of community consultation for the development of its “Imagine 2040” Vision prioritised better and safer walking and cycling infrastructure across the Peninsula

o   The Safelink’s Petition (at http://chng.it/cdFytzjpnK )  now has over 3150 signatures

o   There are over 20 letters of support for the Safelink from schools and community organisations

The Mornington Community Safelink Group is continuing to meet regularly with Council staff, Councillors and local members of Parliament, to advocate for it.

Our local politicians have all indicated support for it. They face elections in the next year and we need to secure their funding commitments. The Peninsula Trail is a perfect COVID Recovery Project with $22.5m of direct economic benefit in the construction phase, $3.3m pa and 26 direct jobs, 51 indirect jobs, and $5.6m of health benefits in the operational phase.

Please help by signing the petition, http://chng.it/cdFytzjpnK  following the Safelink on facebook, at https://www.facebook.com/morningtonsafelink/    and talking to your local Councillors and Politicians . Thanks to everyone who already has done so.

The Mornington Community Safelink will run along the old Railway Line from the end of Peninsula Link Trail , at Moorooduc Station to the Mornington Station on the corner of Yuilles and Watts Roads, and ultimately into Main St Mornington
