Still room for action

Save Cuttagee Bridge sends "A heartfelt thank you to the thousands of people — locally and beyond — who have stood with us over the last four years in calling for a single-lane, heritage-sensitive bridge at Cuttagee" ...... " Option 3 — a two-lane, 12.2-metre-wide concrete and steel bridge. (The current bridge is only 5m wide)"....... "will cost $29 million (and rising), introduces 80km/h speeds through a fragile coastal environment, and includes no timber — not even “decorative” elements.
We extend our thanks to the four councillors who stood with the community and voted against the motion — Crs O’Neil, Daly, Mudaliar and Haggar.
Those who voted for Option 3, the concrete and steel 2 lane bridge, were Crs Allen, Fitzpatrick, Nadin, Noble and Porter".

Bermagui Community Forum adds "There is little common sense in Council’s decision. The Option 1 single lane bridge was better from a tourism, heritage, cost, pedestrian safety and environmental perspective" and quoted Minister Aitchison's disappointment at the lack of heritage, which was a requirement of the funding agreement.

There is still a process to follow before the construction starts, including a full environmental assessment (little has been noted about climate change impacts such as sea level rise and increased storm activity causing erosion) and finding the extra $15million (which won't be the final total cost). One suggested solution to the safety issue due to the 80 kph speed at the bridge is to ban parking so direct access to the northern part of Cuttagee will be restricted.
