So the update is repeated below.

In addition, Bermagui Community Forum has this information available:

https://mailchi.mp/f88d76f5bb39/bermagui-community-forum-update-council-candidates-have-their-say-19134921?e=c637363b28

Of note, each of the 6  candidates (O’Neil, Daly, Griff, Wright,  Bourke and Britten) at the candidate forum held by Bermagui Community Forum on 23 November supported reversal of the Council decision to demolish Cuttagee Bridge.

Best wishes,

Karen

Dear Friends of Cuttagee Bridge

With elections for local council just around the corner, this update is to provide you with the final outcome of our lobbying of the candidates on behalf of Cuttagee Bridge.

We asked all candidates for the Bega Valley Shire council if they would pledge to save the bridge. The good news is that we a large number of candidates did in fact agree to do so:

·      We have pleasure in advising that a vote for any of those candidates would, on the face of it, be a vote to save Cuttagee Bridge.

·      We have pleasure in further recommending five candidates, who we regard as particularly strongly committed to our cause and to progressive outcomes for the  shire as a whole.

We are delighted with this overall positive response. Disappointingly however four candidates refused to respond to our questions – including three incumbent councillors, who each voted to demolish Cuttagee Bridge.

Pre-polling is now underway and election day is Saturday 4 December. Voting is compulsory. Please remember that non-resident ratepayers are eligible to vote, if enrolled.

You must vote for at least 5 candidates to cast a valid vote (as nine councillors will be elected).

All our questions, and all the candidate responses, can be read on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/townhallshire/posts/223810743217291 Thanks to the Bega Shire election town hall for publishing this material.  We urge anyone interested to plunge into the detail.

The five candidates we recommend for election to the council are:

·      Cr Cathy Griff, lead Green candidate …

·      Helen O’Neil, lead Labor candidate …

·      Karen Wright, independent

·      Cr Liz Seckold, independent

·      Joy Robin, independent.

The other candidates who have supported our pledge are: David Porter, Neil Bourke, Michael Britten and Josh Shoobridge as well as all Green candidates and both Labor candidates.

The incumbent councillors who failed to support our campaign to Save Cuttagee Bridge are: Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick, Cr Mitch Nadin and Cr Tony Allen. Candidate Nathan O’Donnell also failed to respond.

Finally, once again we thank you for your interest in the beloved icon that is Cuttagee Bridge and for your commitment to defending it from demolition and replacement with two lane concrete. It is your collective voices that motivated candidates to take this issue seroiously. So here’s hoping for an election outcome that defends our beloved bridge from demolition!
