Bega Valley Shire Council has voted and agreed to demolish Cuttagee Bridge. The community has asked Council to rescind that decision, but has not done so.
 
The future of Cuttagee Bridge hangs in the balance.
 
The State Government has plans to demolish all wooden bridges and replace them with concrete bridges. Our Council has also asked the State Government to take over the responsibility for the Tathra-Bermagui Road and all its wooden bridges, as a cost containment measure. This could accelerate the removal of our wooden bridges.

These heritage icons could be lost forever.
 
Show your support to keep and improve our wooden bridges at the Community Meeting on Wednesday 2 June at the Bermagui Country Club Auditorium. Preserve the uniqueness that brings visitors to our area and builds our community. Let Council hear our voices and support our heritage listed bridge. Council will be represented at the Meeting by Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick and senior executives Anthony McMahon and Dr Alice Howe. Sheena Boughen will facilitate the Meeting.

This is a Covid-safe event and spaces are limited to 100 seated attendees so book now.

To date the community has demonstrated its support for retention of the Cuttagee wooden bridge via letters to Council, speakers at two Council public forums, a petition with over 10,000 signatures, a “Save Me” postcard campaign, a community rally at the Bridge with over 200 attending, and supply of possible alternative engineering solutions.
 
We want the community meeting to provide an opportunity to reach a better collaborative solution with Council. There will be the opportunity to ask Council representatives questions and there will be speakers from the Community (3 minute time limit).
 
The real value of the coastal road and bridges is part of a heritage trail. Along the coast of NSW this sequence of wooden bridges doesn’t exist anywhere else. Heritage tourism is a growth area. We have the asset, we just have to maintain it.

The community remains committed to restoring our one lane wooden bridge.
