Save Cuttagee Bridge Protest

The following is a report from the Bermagui Community Forum about the protest held yesterday at the bridge. It was a pleasure to be there, amongst the many people who see the heritage and safety values of Cuttagee Bridge.

Concerned community residents turned out at Cuttagee Bridge in strength yesterday afternoon as part of the Save Cuttagee Bridge campaign. Protesters numbered well over 200.

The community is protesting the recent Council decision to demolish this single lane heritage timber bridge in favour of a two lane concrete bridge. This Council decision was taken in the face of no community consultation, a local heritage listing on the bridge and before environmental issues have been addressed.
 
The protest was organised by Barragga Bay resident Blair Palese. Notable attendees at the protest included BVSC Councillor Cathy Griff and architects Philip and Louise Cox. Also attending was Karen Joynes, organiser of the Change.org petition which has been signed by over 10,000 supporters of the heritage bridge. The protest was covered by ABC News (see ABC South East NSW).
