Medical professionals believe exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and from tanning lamps and beds is the leading cause of melanoma.

“Seeking shade plus using sunscreen or wearing sun-protective clothing is the best practice to limit cancer-inducing sun damage,” says Cecilia Larocca, MD, a dermatologist and skin cancer specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Too much exposure can also cause sunburn, eye damage, and premature wrinkles. Staying in the shade, shielding your skin with clothing, and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 can help lower your risk.

Take the pledge to wear sunscreen EVERY time you STEP outside.
