Nicole S. started this petition to Beaufort County Council and

Friends and residents of Callawassie Drive and the surrounding community, we request your support in an effort against a project that strikes at the heart of the community in which we live. The purpose of this petition is to ensure that we all maintain the quality of life that caused us to call this area our home.

Specifically, we would like to make you aware that on June 18, 2019, Kenneth Scott Builders submitted a conceptual plan application to Beaufort County for Okatie RV Resort – Phase 1. Phase 1 calls for 105 RV pads in a 19-acre area with even greater development in the future that will cover nearly the entire 56-acre lot.

This project will negatively impact our community in the following ways:

• altering the rural character of the land including extensive tree removal

• harming the environment and the wildlife that inhabits it

• increase traffic accidents, noise and invasion of privacy.

If these issues concern you, we ask that you sign our petition and add your voices so that they will be heard by those in authority.

Other factors to consider:

At this point in time, it is unclear what kind of rules and regulations will be put into place for the campground. Nowhere in writing does it state the stay duration, is it short term or long term?

The property is currently zoned as rural (T2R). According to Beaufort County Zoning Department website, the Community Development Codes states, “the Rural (T2R) Zone is intended to preserve the rural character of Beaufort County.” Removing an abundance of trees and packing in a large number of RV pads in about 19 acres for phase one development will in no way uphold the rural character of the county. As more phases are completed, there are likely to be 200 sites for RVs on the property.

Many trees have already been removed from the land and they plan to remove even more. This is harmful to the environment and the animals who inhabit the land. Deforestation makes land more vulnerable to soil erosion when there are no trees to hold the soil in place. Deforestation can also lead to a loss or general degradation of wildlife habitat. Destroying wildlife habitat can lead to an increase in interactions between wildlife and humans in the area, which could be dangerous to nearby residents and their pets.

The proposed entry for the RV park is located at 68 Callawassie Drive. This road is already dangerous with its multiple intersections and limited visibility. An increase in traffic and adding large RVs to the already busy road are detrimental to the safety of our community.

Please stand with us to protect our community’s rural character, wildlife and safety. If this proposed project is passed, it will impact each of our everyday lives in a negative way. Your signature can make a difference.
