This was an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, and we understand why it has generated such strong emotions within the community.
Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns. We have reviewed your petition and feel it is important to clarify some misinformation has been shared in the petition, so that members of the public have an accurate understanding of the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society’s role.
While the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is dedicated to animal welfare, we do not have the authority to enforce provincial or municipal legislation, respond to public safety incidents, or apprehend stray animals in the community. Those responsibilities fall to Provincial Animal Welfare Services, municipal animal control agencies, and police services, depending on the circumstances.
Our role is to provide care, shelter, rehabilitation, and adoption services for animals that are brought into our care. Because public understanding of these different responsibilities is important, we want to ensure that community members are not unintentionally misled about the services we are authorized to provide.
We share the community’s concern for animal welfare. At the same time, it is important that information about the roles and responsibilities of the agencies and organizations involved is accurate so that the public knows who to contact in emergency situations and understands which agencies have the legal authority to respond.
Respectfully, we ask that you update your petition to avoid further confusion being shared to the community.
