Call for Dean Hinkson's Resignation

During her 18 months as Dean of the College, Dean Hinkson has been involved in and/or responsible for the most dishonest administrative conduct in recent memory:

-In the face of 665 signatures (http://bit.ly/r58ntd) against it, she upheld the cancellation of part-time enrollment tuition (difference: up to $17,000) for last-semester seniors in classes 2013 and on. This forced affected students with one-semester theses to graduate early, and affected students with full-year theses to change majors if their department chairs would not negotiate down thesis requirements. She called the strong student reaction an “overreact[ion].”

-She vetoed President Spar’s instructions to arrange meal-plan exemptions between Aramark and individual allergy students who asked.

-Mistakenly believing there was to be an Occupy Columbia protest on the above grievances, she called the NYPD to guard campus and Public Safety to do what an officer on the Barnard Hall steps called “lock[ing] down” the building. She, Communications Director Sun Min, and several public safety officers then monitored what turned out to be a student meeting.

Dean Hinkson also lied on the record about all of the above activity:

-At an SGA Town Hall on part-time, she claimed that despite incentivizing early graduation, the change was due to Barnard’s “four-year nature”; despite the fact that she hadn’t (and wouldn’t) grant exceptions, she would grant exceptions; and despite the option of off-campus housing during part-time enrollment, the change was due to a housing shortage.

-In an email after President Spar’s instructions to give meal plan exemptions, she stated “there are no exemptions from any of the required meal plans.”

-In an email after the protest, she attributed the dramatic security to Occupy’s failure to register the event with Event Services. She also wrote, “Barnard Public Safety did not lock down the campus or attempt to prevent the assembly from taking place” and “They were not prevented from gathering on the steps of Barnard Hall.”

Ultimately Dean Hinkson’s dishonesty would soon become evident, as inevitably the truth would also be on the record. This is what happened with the returning students’ contracts, which, contrary to Dean Hinkson’s and ResLife’s emails and statements, guaranteed housing. While failing to publicly acknowledge her role in this corrupt and likely illegal scandal, Dean Hinkson sent out an additional message on this and the Plimpton converted-doubles issue citing misleading statistics about “students awaiting housing” and chronologically impossible shortage causes.

Tell the administration it’s time to replace Dean Hinkson with a dean who can properly "[o]versee and support the offices and departments that serve students so that they can collectively support and enhance students’ experiences at the College” (http://bit.ly/NDLP0y).
