Countdown on for fire ants

It’s our last chance for action on deadly invasive fire ants. Fire ant eradication will be one of the biggest biosecurity operations ever undertaken in Australia. At next Wednesday’s ministerial meeting our governments must lock in their support for a fully funded, open and independent eradication. We’ve set up a social media blast – called a Thunderclap – to launch immediately before the meeting. It’s a last-minute call for action on fire ants but it will only work if you support it by signing on to share the message with your Twitter and Facebook audiences. If not eradicated they will have a greater impact on Australia than rabbits, cane toads, foxes, camels, wild dogs and feral cats combined, costing more than $1 billion each year. In the US, they have caused almost 100 deaths and cost the economy over $7 billion a year.
