Release the Myxomatosis vaccine

The issue

I have recently lost 12 of my beloved bunnies due to Myxomatosis. I had to euthanize them once it was clear they had contracted this hideous, fatal disease. It was devastating and completely unnecessary. The Myxoma virus was introduced to Australia in the 1950's to control the wild rabbit population. It is very hard to prevent pet bunnies from contracting this disease as it is passed on by biting fleas and mosquitos. In other countries there is a vaccine and the immunisation of pet bunnies in these countries such as the U.K has not affected the wild rabbit population. The fear is that if a vaccinated bunny escaped it would affect the immunity to the disease in the wild rabbit population. The reality is if a vaccinated pet bunny did escape it is unlikely it would survive. It would not know how to find water and would be easy prey. It should be recognised that bunnies are the 3rd most popular pets in Australia only behind dogs and cats. Why is there not more of an outcry? Not only for the unnecessary deaths of pet bunnies but for the thousands of wild bunnies who are just left to suffer a long agonizing death, losing their sight and eventually starving to death. Incredibly cruel. By releasing this vaccine to pet bunnies it will prevent a lot of unnecessary suffering both to pets and pet bunny owners.
