Veto the 21st Century Cures Act

It has come to our attention that many advocates for those that struggle with substance use disorder are supporting this legislation because there is funding for addiction treatment. However, when reading the bill in its entirety it is clear that this legislation has been hi jacked by big pharmaceutical companies and the FDA as they reap all the rewards and funding, granting them less restrictions then they have ever had in this country. The money in the bill designated for treatment dries up in two years with no guarantees for future funding and when broken down, it equals roughly 25 dollars for every person that struggles with substance use disorder in this country during those two years. I believe the following statements from Senators Sanders and Warren speak volume to this legislation...

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement Tuesday on the 21st Century Cures Act:
"At a time when Americans pay, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs, this bill provides absolutely no relief for soaring drug prices. The greed of the pharmaceutical industry has no limit, and this bill includes numerous corporate giveaways that will make drug companies even richer. Further, this bill cuts Medicare and Medicaid by $1 billion, while not even guaranteeing funding for medical research or substance abuse treatment.
"This is a bad bill which should not be passed in its current form. It's time for Congress to stand up to the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies, not give them more handouts."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said the following on the Senate floor:                  “This final deal has only a tiny fig leaf of funding for NIH and for the opioid crisis,” she said on the Senate floor. “And most of that fig leaf isn’t even real. Most of the money won’t be there, unless future Congresses pass future bills in future years to fund those dollars. So why bother with a fig leaf in the Cures bill? Why pretend to give money to NIH or opioids? Because this funding is political cover for huge giveaways to giant drug companies.”
