Reinstate Humanitarian Parole for Haitian Immigrants After Hurricane Matthew
Reinstate Humanitarian Parole for Haitian Immigrants After Hurricane Matthew
The Issue
On September 22, Secretary Johnson announced that DHS would resume deportations of Haitian immigrants at the U.S. border via expedited removal. (https://www.dhs.gov/news/2016/09/22/statement-secretary-johnson-concerning-his-directive-resume-regular-removals-haiti
Such deportations had previously been suspended following the 2010 Earthquake, due to the humanitarian disaster in Haiti and the administration's proper concern over the consequences of returning people to a situation where their lives, health, or safety could be in danger.
The revocation of parole on September 22 was a misguided and callous change of policy from the beginning. In light of the new catastrophe unfolding in Haiti after Hurricane Matthew, it has become all the more outrageous and unconscionable.
The administration must immediately halt all deportations to Haiti, in light of the new crisis in the country, and reinstate humanitarian parole for all Haitian arrivals at the border. This is a matter of simple conscience and humanity.
