Lawyers and Non-Lawyers Urge Our Leaders to Protect Our Democracy

Fellow Americans,

In less than a week, the Electoral College will formalize the results of the 2016 election. In any other normal election year, that would be fine. But this isn't a normal election year.

Like our elected officials, the lawyers who drafted this petition have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. We say this as a bipartisan group: Foreign interference in U.S. elections is a clear and present danger not just for the 2016 elections, but for future elections.

If action isn't taken, our Electoral College will vote to make Donald J. Trump into President Donald J. Trump. They will do this despite news reports showing the CIA and other American intelligence agencies believe that Russian officials were behind the hacking of emails to influence the U.S. election.

We therefore strongly urge:

1) The U.S. Congress to postpone the electoral college vote on December 19 to a later date so the Electoral College can receive an intelligence briefing about the Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Election;
2) President Barack Obama to declassify as much of the relevant information as possible so the electors can have a complete briefing before they vote for the next President of the United States; and
3) Members of Congress to create an independent bipartisan commission similar to the 9/11 Commission.
