We are asking people in the community to support our cause of asking the Bankstown City Council to build an all inclusive playground with fencing, accessible toilets and playground equipment to stimulate and include children with moderate and severe multiple disabilities.
The Bankstown Council area has a large number of families who have a child with a disability and we have three special needs schools catering for children from kindergarten to year 12 which fall under the Bankstown Council catchment area which are Caroline Chisholm School Padstow, Broderick Gillawarna School Revesby and the newly built George Bass School in Bass Hill.
Families and the above mentioned special needs schools have been forced to travel over 40 minutes away to access a safe playground which is fully fenced and facilities built to toilet disabled children and adults which are offered at both Livvi's Place Ryde and Five Dock in order to get our special needs children into the community.
Fencing around a playground is very important as special needs children who are mobile and highly active are unaware of danger and can abscond from their caregivers and the fenced playground can ensure they are safe and caregivers can also attend to siblings.
Accessible toileting facilities that are equipped with a child and adult sized change table, hoist to assist with children in wheelchairs and hand rails on the toilet. These facilities will allow families and schools comfort in knowing they have a place where their child's needs can be met.
A playground built with play areas that will stimulate, calm and provide sensory interest for children with physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities will include the special needs children in the playground environment.
The main reason as to why this playground is so important is so that all children with all abilities can socialise together in the same play space and having an all inclusive playground would be a great asset not only to the families, special needs schools or the Bankstown community but most of all to our beautiful children who have special needs and should be included when it comes to accessing our community playgrounds.
