I spoke to Liz Trevaskis to explain why started a petition calling on the AFL to ban racist fans for life after the unacceptable racial abuse directed at young Jamarra Ugle-Hagan. Click here to listen.

I’ve been an avid AFL footy fan my life, and I've had family members play this great game. So many people were astonished and disgusted and simply couldn't believe the racial abuse directed at Jamara in 2023. AFL players should be able to perform in their workplace without experiencing racial vilification.

The "ripple effect" of racism in sports like the AFL can remind Indigenous people of historical discrimination and marginalization. Enough is enough. Society should have moved beyond ignorance and intolerance by 2023, and people should treat others with respect regardless of race.

The English Premier League's lifetime ban for racist spectators sets a precedent for this, and the AFL should follow their lead in setting a clear and strong stance against racism. In addition to a lifetime ban, I am also calling for clear signage and communication at AFL games to educate and raise awareness about the consequences of racist behaviour.

Despite not yet receiving direct support from the AFL, we must keep pushing for change and reach our goal of 100,000 signatures – the capacity of the MCG.
