The issue
Living near Mellons Bay should be a serene experience; however, the incessant disturbances caused by net fishing activities have made residents like myself feel far from peaceful. Vehicles from net fishers disrupt the peace at all hours, compromising not only the tranquility of our community but also our sense of security. I've been shaken awake in the early hours and have faced verbal abuse from these individuals. Their blatant lack of consideration for those living here is disheartening and distressing.
The impact of this aggressive net fishing extends beyond personal inconvenience. Recently, I witnessed an alarming incident involving a fisherman wielding a machete attempting to free a helpless seal ensnared in his net. The proximity of these nets to the shoreline poses a significant risk to both human swimmers and local fauna. Families visiting our beautiful bay and residents taking leisurely strolls should not fear entanglement or confrontation.
Further, the demeanor of some net fishers is nothing short of intimidating. Residents are often subjected to derogatory names, such as "palangi," contributing to an atmosphere of tension and hostility. Given the presence of a primary school just meters away, this behavior is particularly concerning. Children should never be exposed to such negativity on their daily route to school.
We urge the local council and authorities to take immediate, effective measures to ban net fishing at Mellons Bay. Not only will this protect marine life and beachgoers, but it will also restore peace and a sense of community for residents. Implementing a prohibition on net fishing would include penalties for violators and a schedule of patrols to ensure compliance. Additionally, instituting a system for reporting abusive or dangerous behavior by fishers would empower residents to protect their environment proactively.
Please sign this petition to demand action from local authorities. Together, we can reclaim Mellons Bay as a safe and harmonious space for all to enjoy.
