Deploy UN Emergency Response Units to help transport and organise Syrian refugees
The Issue
I didn't really know how to turn this into an action but a petition seems a good start.
We keep seeing in the news the harrowing images of the thousands of men, women and children from the middle east and in particular Syria having arrived in Europe after incredibly dangerous and often deadly journeys, often at the hands of people traffickers, images of desperation and death, and most people want to do something to help by welcoming them, offering food, clothes, a safe roof over their heads.
All of which is great, but in the meantime why haven't the world leaders mobilised their emergency response units from their military, from the UN, to help and organise these people to get (safely) to safety?
Clearly the overall solution of the problem is complex and made up of many parts, but one aspect that should be addressed as a matter of urgency is the logistical aspect of the people displaced by providing assistance at the point of departure, e.g. medical help, food and shelter, having a plan as to where they will be ending up, setting up papers/visas/IDs etc, helping with organising their outflow from the places they are escaping from, and most of all providing transport into Europe, Canada, the US etc, with military ships and planes, all of which should, at least in part, cut out the desperate need for many to embark on deadly journeys at the hands of criminal smugglers.
I see this as an issue that only all countries together can help resolve and therefore believe it to be the responsibility of all world leaders to deploy, as soon as possible, through the UN, the necessary emergency response units, in the same way as if the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean was due to a major natural disaster.
Thank you.
