On Sunday evening, Global Ocean Commission Co-chair Trevor Manuel, together with National Geographic explorer-in-residence Sylvia Earle, delivered our petition to His Excellency Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson in New York. Mr. Eliasson highlighted the importance of ocean health for the planet and future generations. This petition is a wake up call for global leaders and we are very hopeful that as a result of the power of our collective voice, the UN General Assembly opening this week in New York will now initiate negotiations for a new high seas agreement.
