Dear Mr. Ki-moon

We just learned today that you will be attending the celebration commemorating the 23rd Anniversary of the signing of the peace agreement in Chapultepec Mexico between the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front and the Salvadoran Government on January 16th, 1992.  We are glad that after 23 years the United Nations is still showing its support for  that crucial and historically important process. As proud supporters of peace in the world, we thank you for your participation.

We also learned that as part of your visit to El Salvador you will have meetings with the current president of El Salvador, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, and members of his Government.  We applaud this gesture which will give Salvadorans another opportunity in their struggle to work towards  the construction of a peaceful El Salvador. As you know this has not been an easy task.

The undersigned are members of the community,  not only from Canada, but also from around the world who are concerned about the human rights of immigrants and refugees Canada.  We are respectfully requesting that you include in the topics of your agenda with  Mr Ceren and his Government the situation of human rights of immigrants and refugees in Canada.

This request has its rationale in the fact that thousands of immigrants and refugees in Canada are being affected by decisions made by immigration officials alleging that membership with organizations like the FMLN, (which is now the current government of El Salvador),  is grounds for inadmissibility into Canada. This is because Canadian decision makers have come to the conclusion that the FMLN is, or was, a “terrorist organization”.  We believe that this issue is extremely pertinent to the commemoration on January 16th  and feel very strongly that you should bring this topic to the attention of the Salvadoran Government. Families are being tragically and cruelly torn apart for their role in the struggle to bring democracy and justice to El Salvador during the dark days of the conflict there. To be considered a “terrorist” simply for being a past member of the FMLN (which had mass support at the time) is an unfair characterization that is having tragic consequences for Canadians many years later. Given that the FMLN now runs El Salvador makes this characterization even more illogical and unfair.

By raising this point with the Salvadoran Government you will also be speaking on behalf of thousands of other immigrants and refugees from other parts of the world who now are facing similar situations as Salvadorans in Canada.

Thanks for your attention to our petition and we are looking forward to hear that our request will be part of the agenda on your next visit to El Salvador.

Estimado Sr. Ki-moon:

Nos hemos enterado de su asistencia a la celebración conmemorando el 23 Aniversario de la firma de los Acuerdos de Paz en Chapultepec entre el Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) y el Gobierno de El Salvador el 16 de Enero de 1992.  Estamos muy agredecidos que después de 23 años las Naciones Unidas aún muestran su apoyo a este importante proceso histórico y crucial. Como orgullosos colaboradores de la paz en el mundo, le agradecemos su participación.

También nos hemos enterado que como parte de su visita a El Salvador sostendrá reuniones con el actual presidente de El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Ceren y miembros de su Gobierno. Aplaudimos este gesto que le dará a los Salvadoreños otra oportunidad en su lucha por la construción de un El Salvador en paz. Como usted sabe no ha sido una tarea fácil.

Los abajo firmantes somos miembros de la comunidad, no solo de Canada, sino que de todo el mundo quienes preocupados por los derechos humanos de inmigrantes y refugiados en Canadá,  respetuosamente les pedimos incluir entre los temas de su agenda con el Sr. Sanchez Ceren y su Gobierno, la situación de los derechos humanos de inmigrantes y refugiados en Canadá.

Esta petición esta fundamentada en el hecho que miles de inmigrantes y refugiados en Canada estan siendo afectados por decisiones hechas por oficiales de inmigración alegando que membresía con organizaciones como el FMLN,(que actualmente conforma el Gobierno de El Salvador), es motivo de inadmisibilidad en Canadá. Esto se dá, ya que quienes hacen decisiones en Canadá han llegado a conclusión que el FMLN es o fué una organización "terrorista". Creemos que el problema es extremadamente pertinente a la conmemoracion del 16 de Enero y sentimos fuertemente que usted debería traer el asunto a la atención del Gobierno Salvadoreño. Familias estan siendo cruel y trágicamente separadas por su papel en la lucha que trajo justicia y democracia a El Salvador durante los obscuros dias del conflicto. Ser considerado "terrorista" simplemente por haber sido miembro del FMLN (que tenia un apoyo masivo en ese tiempo) es una caracterización injusta que tiene consecuencias trágicas para Canadienses muchos años despues.  Dado que el FMLN gobierna El Salvador en la actualidad hace esta caracterización aún más ilógica e injusta.

Al traer este problema ante el Gobierno Salvadoreño, usted estará hablando también a favor de miles de inmigrantes y refugiados de otras partes del mundo quienes ahoran enfrentan situaciones similares a los Salvadoreños en Canadá.

Gracias por su atención a nuestra petición y esperamos con ansias escuchar que nuestra solicitud será parte de su agenda en su próxima visita a El Salvador.
